Today is Juneteenth

(Today is June 19th)…In some states, it is a holiday

. Known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. The Day commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the US state of Texas on June 19th, 1865, and more generally, the emancipation of African/American slaves throughout the Confederate South. Celebrations are mostly local, and different in each community. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln in 1862, and became effective on January 1, 1863, it took a while to get the word out to all those affected. Texas was reportedly the last state to be informed.
