(Power Purchase agreement approved, and signed)….The agreement is between the Imperial Irrigation District and Cal Energy
. According to the agreement, the IID will purchase 50 megawatts of geothermal energy from Cal Energy for ten years, beginning in 2019. The agreement will bring the District’s renewable portfolio to 36%, above the 33% threshold required by the state. Cal Energy has been operating geothermal plants in Imperial County for the past 25 years. Their plants are in the Salton Sea area. Also at this weeks IID Meeting, General Manager Kevin Kelley announced that on December 31, 2017, the District will end its involvement with coal power generation. Instead, it will look to add more local renewable resources to its energy portfolio.
