ECPD K9 Snags Cocaine Worth $3.4 Million

Tico , an El Centro Police Department canine , helped his human partner make a big drug bust.

Last Friday night , ECPD Officer James Thompson and Tico were on patrol near Dogwood and McCabe Roads at about 7:15 PM , when he saw a small SUV swerving . Thompson , believing the driver might be under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance , made a traffic stop on the SUV. Thompson discovered that the driver of the SUV did not have a drivers license. A field sobriety test was conducted on the driver and it was determined that he was not under the influence. The driver , 25-year old Francisco Martinez , gave consent for a vehicle search and Tico did the rest. The dog alerted to the vehicle and a search turned up approximately 15 pounds of cocaine with a street value of more than $3,400,000. Martinez was arrested and charged with possession and transportation of cocaine for sales.
