(It is time to get a Flu Shot)….This according to the California Department of Public Health.
State Health Officer Doctor Karen Smith, Californians should get the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available. In Imperial County, the vaccine becomes available this week. Doctor Smith says unlike some other infections, a person with influenza may be contagious and infect others before they have or show symptoms. She says the annual vaccine is the most reliable way to protect against infection and, therefore, stop transmission of influenza to others. During last year’s Flu Season there were 78 influenza-associated deaths reported in persons under 65 years of age statewide. Imperial County Health Officer Doctor Stephen Munday says it takes the vaccine about two weeks to become effective, another reason why you should get a flu shot now. This year flu shots cost $5.00 each at the Health Department.
