(Major seizure south of the Border)…It was announced Monday.
The Second Military Region office in Mexicali said soldiers discovered $11.5 million in U.S. currency and 600 rounds of ammunition hidden in a truck hauling strawberries. The soldiers were inspecting traffic at San Emeterio, South of Sonoyta on Highway 2. The contraband was discovered Sunday. Officials say large sums of U.S. currency are critical to drug traffickers in Mexico. The money helps them bribe officials, purchase weapons, hire hit men, pay off debts or underwrite other expenses. The cash is usually the proceeds of drug sales in the United States. The officials said late Monday that the ammunition was of various calibers. One suspect was arrested during the seizure.
