A Mexicali family was detained Saturday when more than 50 pounds of cocaine was found in their car.
The family attempted to cross the international border at the Andrade port of entry at about 8:00 A.M. Saturday. The car was referred to secondary inspection where a search led to the discovery of 22 wrapped packages hidden in several compartments built in to the sedan's rocker panels. The packages contained approximately 51 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $670,000. The driver of the car , a 42-year old Mexicali resident , was taken into custody and booked into Imperial County Jail. A 38-year old woman and three minor children were also in the car. They were released and returned to Mexico. Andrade Port Director , David Sarrasin said , " We find narcotics in all kinds of vehicles , and unfortunately all types of travelers."
