| Americans lose an estimated $12 billion a year due to travel fraud, according to the AARP. Due to this high figure, the Better Business Bureau reports the travel industry consistently ranks among the top 25 of the 3,900 businesses monitored for fraud. To avoid becoming a part of this statistic, consumer protection officials recommend using a trusted travel agent so everything is in writing before any monetary transactions are completed. Travelers should also pay with a credit card and never use cash. Experts also say the cliché holds true - if a deal seems too good to be true, then it usually is. Should a traveler fall victim to a scam artist, they should contact their local Attorney General to report the situation. |
