Salem, Oregon – Continuing his effort to raise awareness about hunger in Oregon, Governor Kulongoski next week will participate in a variety of events to raise awareness about how low-income and working class families make ends meet and afford nutritious food for their families. Throughout the week, the Governor will highlight ways all Oregonians can get involved in the fight against hunger and the difficulties of living off food stamps.

Every year the Governor declares a week in April "Hunger Awareness Week" to: 1) Promote awareness about the hunger problem in Oregon; 2) Educate about the root causes of hunger; and 3) Help inspire citizens and communities throughout the state to take action to help end hunger in Oregon.

This year, the Governor and First Lady will kick-off Hunger Awareness Week by starting the "Food Stamp Challenge." Earlier this month, the Governor challenged all Oregonians to live off of the average food stamp budget of $21 per week, per person for the week of April 23-29, 2007
