Young adults between the ages of 15 to 24 saw the greatest increase in deaths from accidental prescription drug poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In 2004, CDC officials say poisoning was second only to car crashes as the primary cause of death from unintentional injury in the U.S. Although younger individuals experienced the greatest increase in deaths, the highest rate of deaths occurred in people between the ages of 35 to 54. AARP officials report that caregivers of teenagers should lock up any prescription medication as to avoid these unwanted situations. The CDC reports mismanagement of prescription pain killers and sedatives result in the highest number of unintentional deaths. Authorities advise individuals who know of someone misusing prescription drugs to call their local poison control center for advice. |
