The Mayors Trophy is on the line this week as Southwest High Schools Eagles host the Central Union High School Spartans in the KXO  AM1230 featured game. It's neighbor against neighbor...cousin against cousin...Pop Warner and Little League team mates playing against each other AND it's the first Imperial Valley League game of the season for both teams.
The Eagles of Coach Mike Swearingen are 2 and 3 on the year. They are coming off an impressive  27 to 6 win over the Coronado Islanders. The solid Eagle defense held the Islanders to two long field goals ( 39 and 35 yards ) and kept them out of the end zone with a spectacular 1st and goal effort , stopping the Islanders short of the goal. Mo Castro , the senior quarterback , was impressive with big plays to several receivers. Mike Dukes along with David Alba , Matt Garcia and Jon Iruegas kept Coronado honest with their inside and outside runs. But it was the defense with Jacob Jones, Victor Gradillas, Sal Sanchez , John Parra and Elliott Tagg among others that gave the offense great field position all night and contributed to the win. The Spartans of Coach Kevin Bird are 5 and 1 on the year. They handled the Francis Parker Lancers in San Diego last week coming home with a 49 to 28 victory. The 28 points was more than the Spartans normally stingy defense had allowed in the previous four games combined. The Spartans were led by Junior Jaqueem Colemans slashing runs and Joe Signorottis solid work at fullback. The offensive line has been able to dominate most opponents with senior center Adrian Escalera with line mates Michael Valenzuela , Bryan Avelar , Peter McDonald and Luis Martinez providing holes for the backs. Quarterback Karl Chick along with sophomore Ricky Smith , senior Brock Moore and senior Benny Carter add to the Spartans arsenal.
