El Centro's Doug Harvey missed being selected for the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee today. Harvey, who grew up in El Centro and was a multi-sport star at Central Union High School and Imperial Valley College, received 52 of the 81 votes for election to the Hall.

75% yes votes were needed for election. Harvey, 76 , umpired in the National League from 1962 - 1992. The Veterans Committee also denied Hall of Fame entry to players Ron Santo, Jim Kaat , Maury Wills, Roger Maris, Luis Tiant, Bobby Bonds and Joe Torre as well as Dick Williams, Whitey Herzog, Walter O'Malley and Charles O. Finley. The Veterans Committee is comprised of all 61 living Hall of Famers , 14 broadcasters , 8 writers and 1 holdover from the previous panel. The committee votes every other year for players and every four years for the others.
