(West Nile Virus still a threat)….Imperial County Public Health is encouraging local residents to continue taking precautions to prevent the virus. The Department says residents should continue to use mosquito repellent when out of doors, in the morning and at dusk. Surveillance activity confirms Imperial County is at the peak of mosquito activity. West Nile is very much a concern statewide. Health officials say 36 of California’s 52 Counties have reported the virus as being present. A woman recently died from the virus in Orange County, and this week, two people in San Diego County reportedly contracted the virus. Doctor Stephen Munday, Imperial County Health Officer, says even though West Nile has been around for a while, it is still important for residents to take precautions, such as wearing mosquito repellent and eliminating Mosquito breeding sources around their homes Munday said it is expected the high level of mosquitoes will continue through September and October. |
