Thunderstorms and accompanying high winds ripped eastern Imperial County early Friday morning. The National Weather Service says that the thunderstorms caused some flooding of washes in the eastern desert. The California Highway Patrol reported some roadway flooding as well. Several utility poles were knocked down in the Grays Wells area west of the Sand Hills Rest Area. Scattered showers and some winds were reported in the rest of the valley but early reports say damage was minimal. National Weather Service forecasters and Imperial Valley Meteorologist Jim Christopherson say that more humidity and the chance of thunderstorms remains through the Labor Day weekend. The humidity and storms are said to be remnants left over from tropical storm Julio.
