(Imperial Irrigation District Board declares Supply/Demand Imbalance for 2009)….IID General Manager Brian Brady told the Board Tuesday it is estimated a major stipulation for an SDI will be met.

In December of last year the Board adopted the regulations for equitable distribution that provide for its implementation. According to the regulations, staff determines whether the probability of total water demand exceeding IID’s Colorado River water supply is greater than 50 percent. If the probability is greater than 50% then the District can declare a Supply/Demand Imbalance. Brady said it is estimated the probability is 64-86 percent. It is estimated there will be a 105,000 acre feet of water over-run at the end of the year. After the Board approved the Declaration, Brady said public workshops would be scheduled within the next three weeks to educate the community on the equitable distribution regulations for the coming year. The SDI would mean a form of water rationing to the farming community. The vote for the declaration was unanimous. Director Mike Abatti said it is important that growers attend the workshops. He said nothing is in concrete as to acreage and other issues, and they would be discussed in the public forums.
