(The County Board of Supervisors want an investigation and an explanation)….The Supervisors said Tuesday they were very concerned about the May 28 telephone outage in Imperial County.

The Board agreed to send a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission, calling for an investigation into the outage and demanding a remedy. They agreed it was inexcusable for the entire County to lose telephone service, including the 911 emergency service. Supervisor Larry Grogan said the investigation should also look into the fact AT & T has not back-up system in Imperial County. He said he was sure an outage like the one that hit Imperial County would never occur in San Diego or any other County in the State.

He said he wanted the investigation to determine if AT & T is using sub-standard equipment in Imperial County. Grogan said he found it incredible that one person could be blamed for causing such a complete disaster. The Board also agreed with a suggestion by Supervisor Joe Maruca to invite A T & T officials to the County to explain exactly what happened on May 28, and how they plan to prevent it from happening in the future. They said Imperial County is completely dependent on AT & T.

They said there was one backbone telephone system and it is owned by AT & T, and they rent out space in the system to other companies. When the AT & T system fails, all other services go down with them.
