According to the Border Patrol , an agent traveling south on Ogilby Road at about 7:30 Saturday evening observed an older model pickup truck also southbound. The driver of the truck began driving erratically , making several reckless manuevers after noticing that he was being followed. The Border Patrol agent conducted a vehicle stop as the pickup neared the international border and discovered various pieces of railroad track in the bed of the truck. The Imperial County Sheriffs Department and Union Pacific Railroad Police responded to the scene and the railroad police were able to identify the metal in the truck as spikes, brake shoes, tie plates and sidings, all property of Union Pacific. The driver of the pickup , Esteban Arroyo-Varela of Yuma , was arrested as was a woman, also from Yuma , who was a passenger in the truck. Both were charged with criminal trespassing , conspiricy and grand theft. Arroyo-Varela has previously been arrested for possession of dangerous drugs and illegal substance smuggling. |
