(Budget protests hit Imperial County)…..There were two protests concerning the State budget, but for different reasons. The California School Employee Association held a vigil at Assembly woman Bonnie Garcia’s El Centro office. Organizers say the gathering was more a prayer gathering that Garcia and other legislators would get serious about approving a state budget without sacrificing the disabled, schools and other essential community services. The State Employees International Union did hold a protest. They protested against the Governors proposal to cut the wages of state employees until a state budget is set. The Governor has signed legislation to reduce state wages to the federal minimum until a budget compromise is reached. The legislators are trying to find a way to reduce a $15 billion deficit is the state spending plan. The vigil and the protest were both held Wednesday in El Centro. |
