(Incomplete drug tunnel found in Mexicali)….The sophisticated tunnel was discovered Monday afternoon.

State Preventive Police made the discovery after they responded to an anonymous call. Officers from the department, known as PEP, arrived at the residence on Madero Avenue, at “C” Street and found a man outside. Once the man noticed the officer he fled. The officers caught the man and found he was armed with a handgun. Inside the house, five other suspects were arrested after a brief pursuit. An investigation resulted in the arrest of two more suspects. Five were allegedly from the State of Sinaloa, Mexico and 3 were from Guadalara. Under the house the officers found an incomplete tunnel, about 120 meters long, which traveled north. The tunnel does not reach the international border. The suspects reportedly told the officers the tunnel was to be used to traffic narcotics into the United States, but they would not say who was paying them to construct the tunnel. They said the tunnel is well lit, with air conditioning and a ventilation system. The PEP officers said they were continuing to investigate to try and determine who was paying for the tunnel. Past drug tunnels found in the Calexico/Mexicali area have been discovered on the United States side of the international border.
