San Luis, Arizona - An apparent smuggling attempt early Monday morning ended with the death of an unidentified man when his marijuana-laden ultralight aircraft crashed in a field.
At about 7:15 yesterday morning field workers reported a small airplane crashed in a lettuce field about a mile north of San Luis and a mile east of the Colorado River. Emergency crews from several agencies in Yuma County responded and discovered the small airplane was an ultralight motorized glider. The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Several bundles of marijuana were strapped to the aircraft. In all, 141 pounds of marijuana were discovered. The incident is under investigation by the San Luis Police Department. It is the second known smuggling attempt using this type of aircraft in the last two months.
