(A dispute between Human Smugglers turns violent)…Calexico Police Sergeant Gonzalo Gerardo said the dispute turned nasty last Friday. That is when Daniel Fernandez was shot in the back. Fernandez was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where the bullet was removed. The Sergeant says it was not a life threatening injury. Monday, in apparent retaliation two individuals in Calexico chased and shot at an unidentified 19 year old and the 9 year old in the vehicle with him. Gerardo says two suspects were arrested in the Monday incident. Taken into custody were Osbaldo Verduzco and Carlos Cortez. The Sergeant says the suspect who shot Fernandez is still at large. Gerardo says the shootings apparently have to do with a dispute between human smugglers in the area.
