(New Warden introduced to the Board of Supervisors)…Michael Smelosky told the Board he was officially appointed this month.

Smelosky was originally appointed as interim Warden at Centinela State Prison after the then Warden was reassigned. Smelosky had served as the Chief Deputy Warden at the Ironwood facility before being reassigned to Centinela. He began his career with the Department of Corrections in 1984 as a Youth Facility Supervisor with Charter Provo Canyon School. Smelosky told the Board he looked forward to working with the County and the local communities. He said he has developed a very good relationship with the Warden at Calipatria State Prison, and they plan on collaborating on several community efforts. Centinela is a designed 2400 bed facility, but because of over-crowding, it currently houses approximately 5100 inmates. Smelosky told the Supervisors he was technically the acting Warden until the Governor makes the appointment official.
