(San Diego agrees to safety measures at the All American Canal)….The measures are being sought by John Hunter. He is the brother of Congressman Duncan Hunter in El Cajon. Hunter has been pressuring the Imperial Irrigation District for years to include safety measures in the concrete lining of about 25 miles of the All American Canal. At his last presentation, Hunter and a filmmaker presented a documentary on the dangers of the Canal and all those who have died in the waters. At the time, IID Directors told Hunter he had their sympathy, but San Diego County Water Authority and the State of California were paying for the project and they were responsible for what went into it. Hunter, armed with letters of support from his brother and Congressman Bob Filner, has now made a couple presentations before the San Diego County Water Authority Board. They have reportedly agreed to construct a safety fence on the south side of the Canal. The San Diego Board has also agreed to work with the Imperial Irrigation District in Developing an Educational Outreach to try to deter people from entering the All American Canal. The San Diego Authority said they needed more study on the ideas of stringing buoys across the Canal at intervals, and constructing more ladders, and placing them closer together on the concrete walls of the Canal. |
