(While Imperial County is concerned about the Route, S D G & E is trying to garner support for the Project)….The Project is the proposed Sunrise Power Link. The Imperial Irrigation District is concerned about the route San Diego Gas and Electric wants to construct to import renewable resources from Imperial County to San Diego County. In San Diego, however, S D G & E is having a hard time finding anybody to support the project at all. It is still an uphill battle for the San Diego Utilities planned $1.5 billion project. The California Public Utility Commission will be deciding on the possible permits for the project by the end of summer or early fall. The Commission study offered seven alternatives to S D G & E to develop 20 percent of their energy transmission from environmentally safe resources by the year 2010. Neither of the top two alternatives endorsed the Sunrise Power link. The C P U C will conduct another round of Public Comment meetings. Next week three additional meetings will be held to take public comments and comments from Government entities affected by the project. S D G & E is doing what it can to find some type of public support. They have funded what they are calling the “Community Alliance for the Sunrise Powerlink.” the Utility funded Alliance will conduct a publicity campaign to try and convince residents there is support for the project. Previous public meetings have resulted in overwhelming comments against the proposed Powerlink. |
