(Early morning fatal injury victim identified)…The Imperial County Coroners Office said 39 year old Vanessa Henderson of El Centro was driving the vehicle than ran into a tree off Adams Avenue. El Centro police say they responded to the tragic accident at 5:52 Friday morning. It was reported a vehicle was traveling West on Adams failed to negotiate the curve at 5th Street. The vehicle veered off the roadway, crashing into a large tree at the apartment complex at 494 Adams. The El Centro Fire Department was summoned to the scene. They used the Jaws of Life to extricate the victims from the badly mangled vehicle. The front seat passenger in the vehicle, 34-year-old Annette Robinson of El Centro sustained unknown injuries and was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment. The rear seat passenger, 32-year-old Tina Robinson, suffered broken bones and possible internal injuries. She was flown by helicopter to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs. Henderson was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Sergeant Jeff Mason says only the front seat passenger was wearing a seatbelt. He said based on what was found in the vehicle, drugs and alcohol might have contributed to the collision. Mason said a complete investigation will determine the extent the drugs and alcohol played in the crash, if any. Investigators say witnesses told them the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, hit the curb, spun around and the vehicles roof hit the tree. The registered owner of the vehicle is Mary Scott of Imperial. Mason says the investigation is continuing and anyone who may have witnessed the crash is encouraged to call the Police Departments Traffic Unit at 336-8991. |
