(Real Heroes Breakfast is Friday)….The event is the San Diego/Imperial County Chapter of the American Red Cross annual event. During the event the Chapter honors real people who have done extraordinary things. The Imperial County Real Heroes are Matt and Amanda Hagen. On January 24, the couple rescued Dylan Hale, who was trapped in his Volkswagon Beetle. The vehicle had crashed into the canal near Austin Road, and was upside down in the water. Amanda Hagen helped pull the then 17 year old from the vehicle, despite the fact she was five months pregnant. Doctor Hagen, a Neurologist, was returning home to Brawley after working at the Naval Air Facility/El Centro. Her Attorney husband Matt was following in a separate vehicle when the accident occurred. The Hagen’s, now New York residents are flying in to San Diego to receive their awards. Hale, now an 18 year old student at the University of California, will also be at the special breakfast. The event will be held on the USS Midway in San Diego. The keynote speaker is former New York City Fire Chief Daniel Nigro. He was appointed Chief the afternoon of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Twin Towers. The Imperial County contingent at the Breakfast will be led by Red Cross Board member Gene Brister and local Red Cross Director Sylvia Preciado. |
