(A Real Heroe will speak to the Real Heroes)….The American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial County Chapter will host its Real Heroes Breakfast on September 26.

The event this year will be held on the USS Midway in San Diego, now known as the Midway Museum.  The guest speaker will be retired New York Fire Chief Daniel Nigro. Nigro became Chief of the New York Fire Department September 11, 2001, after the collapse of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center. The former Chief was one of 343 firefighters killed in the collapse. Nigro led the worlds largest Fire Department through the 9/11 disaster and for the next year. Nigro retired on September 9, 2002. The much awarded Chief was the first Bureau Chief to oversee the merger of the Fire Department with EMS, and has also served as Chief of Personnel, Chief of Health Services, Chief of Operations and Citywide Tour Commander, overseeing all major emergencies throughout New York City. He retired after serving 33 years with the Department. Nigro told KXO News he considered it an honor to be able to speak with the Red Cross Real Heroes. He said he does not consider himself as a heroe, but rather as a 9/11 survivor.
