(The American Red Cross of the San Diego and Imperial Counties is honoring Real Heroes)….Heroes from this region are being recognized at the major fundraising breakfast being held inside the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center in Mission Valley.

Imperial County is well represented in Heroic endeavors. In the prestigious Company category, U.S. Gypsum was chosen. USG is a community leader in corporate and family preparedness. In order to ensure a safe environment at their production plants, the company has created a Crisis Response Plan that details how to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, such as hazardous materials spills, floods, earthquakes and fires. USG has also developed a pandemic flu plan, preparing employees in case of an outbreak. In addition, every new employee at USG is given a complete preparedness guide for the plant and at home. In the Law Enforcement Category, the BORSTAR team of the El Centro U.S. Border Patrol is being recognized. The Border, Search, Trauma and Rescue Team has responded to more than 25 different incidents involving a search and/or medical rescue of individuals stranded in the remote areas of Imperial Valley. They have come to the aide of 48 people in need of medical attention, 36 of whom were found in life-threatening situations. Imperial County also has the Real Hero in the Youth Category. Jose Garcia of Brawley is receiving the well-deserved recognition. ON October 5, 2006 Jose, then a sixth grader, was eating lunch at Phil Swing Elementary School, outside the Cafeteria. Suddenly another student at Jose’s table began turning red and couldn’t clear his throat. Jose immediately realized the student was choking and needed help. Jose began performing abdominal thrusts, which dislodged the food from the boy’s throat. The student began breathing again, and suffered no further injury.
