(A Chase in Brawley ends with the apprehension of 17 illegal migrants)…..Brawley Police Sergeant Perry Monita says his department received the call at around 9:30 Wednesday morning. Monita said officers picked up the chase on North bound Highway 86. The U.S. Border Patrol was pursuing a pick-up. The Sergeant says the pursuit lasted about 6 minutes as it traveled through Brawley, winding up at the end of Eastern Avenue, at the Brawley Airport. Monita says the suspect vehicle went through two chain link fences, and was stopped by the second fence. A foot pursuit ensued, but everybody was caught. The Sergeant said the passengers identified the driver of the suspect vehicle. Monita says as the Border Patrol began explaining the charges that would be filed against the driver, he began to hyperventilate. The unidentified man was taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital to be stabilized. The Brawley Sergeant said 17 illegal immigrants were taken into custody by the Border Patrol. He said the driver will be charged with felony evasion and endangering the lives of the passengers, some of which were lying in the bed of the pick-up. Additional charges will be filed by the Border Patrol. |
