(Decision on new area code not a done deal, after all)…Last April the California Public Utility Commission announced the year long process was over. The Commission said a new 442 area code would be implemented in North San Diego County in November. The Commission has decided to revisit that decision. The set October 16th as the date to go over the full range of options for a new area code. They are the same options the commission studied for a year before announcing their decision in April. The new area code is needed, because officials say the 760 area code will run out of numbers within a year. Before the Commission meets in October, two Public Hearings will be held. The first will be September 3 at the Victorville City Hall, and the second, September 4 at the Carlsbad City Hall. Both will start at 4:00 in the afternoon. A proposed decision would be mailed by September 16 for consideration at the commission October 16 meeting. A website out of Leucadia is still promoting the over-lay option for the new area code. That option says all new number in the current 760 area code zone would be assigned the 442 area code. That means everybody in the 760 area would be dialing ten digit numbers, even if they wanted to call across the street. In April the Commission decided it would be easier to change the area code for North San Diego County to 442. |
