(A high speed chase goes from Brawley to El Centro)…Officials say the chase began in the 400 block of West Main in Brawley when Officer Rotner spotted an S U V wanted in Chino. It had been reported that 29 year old Epifanio Mercado had kidnapped a 17 year old girl from her parents restaurant Friday afternoon. Mercado led officers on a chase through Brawley, before finding Highway 86, and heading south. Speeds reached over 100 miles per hour as the pursuit went south into El Centro. The S U V collided with a fence near Aurora and La Brucherie. The suspect fled on foot. He was later found hiding in a boat parked at a residence on Pepper Drive. A three-block perimeter was set up, and traffic stopped during the manhunt. Mercado was placed under arrest, while the girl was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center for observation. The hospital check-up was a precaution. Officials say she did not appear to be injured. |
