(Brawley landmark most likely a complete loss)….Officials are still assessing the damage to the historic Planters Hotel in Brawley.

Firefighters from around the County and from Yuma, Arizona spent the early morning hours fighting the blaze that consumed the historic landmark, across from the Plaza in Brawley. As firefighters mopped up Wednesday, and crews returned to their home stations, reports were that the fire had compromised the integrity of the structure, and the building would probably have to be knocked down as soon as possible. Sources say the structure is a safety hazard, following the damage from the fire. Cost estimates have not been released and the investigation into the cause of the fire is just getting underway. Speculation is that the fire started on the fourth floor, but nobody will speculate on the cause.
