(Marijuana found in a ladder)….San Luis Port Director William Brooks says smugglers attempt unusual methods to get narcotics into the United States, but they still manage to get caught.

This seizure happened Tuesday. Early in the morning, a Customs and Border Protection officer became suspicious while questioning a 40-year-old man crossing into the U.S. from San Luis, Mexico. The officer sent the man, who was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram van, to the secondary inspection area. During the secondary search a narcotics detector dog alerted to the odor of narcotics in the roof of the van. During a more intensive search, officers noticed discrepancies in two ladders on top of the vehicle. The ladders were taken down and opened up. Inside, the found 74 packages of marijuana, weighing 211 pounds. The value of the marijuana was set at $343,000. The driver was placed under arrest. He, the vehicle and contraband were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.
