(One woman is dead and several injured after being ejected from a speeding vehicle)….The California Highway Patrol says a 1996 Chevrolet Suburban was speeding South on Drew Road Sunday morning. At just after 10:00 the driver of the vehicle attempted to navigate a 15 mile per hour curve at approximately 75 miles per hour. The driver lost control and over-turned. A 19-year-old woman was ejected from the vehicle. The County Coroners Office says she was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle was carrying 22 passengers, some of which were seriously injured. The occupants were reportedly illegal migrants from Mexico. Highway Patrol Officer Wes Boerner says the vehicle was not being pursued by Border Patrol Agents. He said the Border Patrol was tracking the vehicle through video surveillance, and the Agents were prepared to eventually stop the vehicle, but a pursuit was not underway. The El Centro Border Patrol Office is not responding to telephone calls. They will not confirm a report the driver of the suspect vehicle had taken a Border Patrol Unit at the scene, north of Highway 98, and ran into a Border Patrol Agent in his attempt to escape. Mexicali Police are saying they have arrested the driver and two accomplices in the human smuggling incident. They are identifying the driver of the Suburban as 19-year-old Hector Maldonado Ramirez. They say his 23 year old brother Heriberto and 47 year old boss, Jose Leonidez Montes de Oca Salgado, were also in custody. The Mexican Consulate is reportedly assisting the Coroners office in the notification of the family of the young woman who died in the incident. An Autopsy will be performed Friday to determine exactly how she died. |
