(El Centro Police issue an official statement on the Ranch Market shooting)…..The statement says officers were called to the Market in the Valley Plaza at 4:35 Wednesday afternoon.

They found two men shot inside the store, one with a handgun. Officers took the armed man into custody, and he was transported to El Centro Regional medical center, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was officially identified as 59-year-old Jorge Raul Zepeda of El Centro. The Police statement identifies the other man as the victim. He was 55-year-old Jorge Navarrette of Imperial. Navarrette was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body. Zepeda died from a single gunshot to the head. The statement says Navarrette and his wife, Aurora, operated a jewelry store inside Ranch Market. Zepeda was Aurora’s half brother. Police say witness interviews indicate Zepeda entered the east door of the Market and immediately began firing at Navarrette, who was standing at his jewelry counter. After shooting Navarrette, Zepeda was reloading his revolver and talking on his cell phone. Police say Zepeda then shot himself once in the head. Autopsies on both Zepeda and Navarrette have been scheduled for Friday. The statement says the investigation has not yet lead to a motive for the shooting. Police are recommending those who witnessed the tragic event and need assistance to contact the Victim Witness Program for possible counseling. They can reach the Program at 336-3930. The police statement extends condolences to the families involved, and expresses appreciation to all the law enforcement agencies assisting during the incident and investigation.
