| (Border Patrol Agents seize two large amounts of drugs near Niland this week)….The first seizure occurred Tuesday by Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol Agents at the Highway 111 checkpoint. Indio Station Agents were working the checkpoint at around 2:20 in the afternoon when a 1985 Chrysler pulled into the primary inspection area. As the Agent interviewed the 30-year-old driver of the vehicle, the C B P Canine Team alerted to the vehicle. A more detailed inspection resulted in the discovery of 37 pounds of marijuana, valued at $29,000. The driver, a Mexican Citizen with a valid Border Crossing card, was arrested and turned over to the Imperial County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, along with the vehicle and the marijuana. A more substantial seizure occurred Wednesday at the same checkpoint. Again, Agents from the Indio Station were operating the checkpoint. They were interviewing a 2003 Nissan at 1:30 in the afternoon when, again, the canine unit alerted to the vehicle.. A search of the vehicle revealed a modified compartment underneath the rear seat. Agents found 31 cellophane wrapped packages that tested positive for cocaine, valued at $2,568,400. The driver of the vehicle was a 49 year old female Mexican citizen, with a valid Border Crossing Card. The driver, the cocaine and the vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. |
