(Another drainage gate thief is on the loose)…Imperial Irrigation District Water Manager Mike King says it has to be another gate thief, because the original one is still in jail.

King said this week more than 25 gates have disappeared. The gates are aluminum & have aluminum components, making them valuable with recyclers. The last thief was apparently selling the gates he stole in Mexicali. That thief was caught after taking almost 200 of the rather expensive water gates. King says this time around a $2,500 reward is being offered in an effort to keep the thefts to a minimum. King also said this week the planned East Highline Canal outage scheduled for January might not happen. The Canal is scheduled to be taken out of service to be cleaned out. King said the Canal is being sounded to determine the level of silt and debris. He said the Canal was cleaned just five years ago. King said it may be possible to spot clean the waterway, eliminating the need to completely take it out of service.
