Neujahr new Calexico Police Chief, after all

(Calexico has a new Police Chief)…In an unexplained reversal, the Calexico City Council Tuesday night agreed to follow their City Manager’s recommendation. 20. Earlier in the month Ralph Velez had recommended Lt. Jim Neujahr be named to succeed Chief Mario Sanchez when he steps down December 19. At the time, the Council voted against the recommendation 2-3, and suggested hiring a recruitment firm to begin the process all over again. Sanchez was to be asked to stay on as interim Chief a couple months more. Tuesday night the Council was to select the recruitment firm. Instead, they heard from several concerned citizens, went into closed session, and then, with little comment, announced Neujahr was being appointed as the Cities new Police Chief. Councilman David Ouzan was the sole vote against the appointment. He said he felt the original selection process had been tainted after a member of the advisory committee had leaked Neujahr’s name before it went to the Council. Ouzan said the process had to begin again. Neujahr, Wednesday morning, said he felt it was the community reaction that changed the minds of the majority of the Council. He said he was very proud of the support. The 49-year-old Neujahr is a 14-year veteran with the Calexico Police Department. He expects his first full day as Chief will be December
