Construction has started on two large, new hangers to replace three smaller buildings at Naval Air Facility El Centro. Accoring to an article in The Navy Times, the $18 million project will allow for two larger hangers designed to accomodate the Joint Strike Fighter and other aircraft. Three smaller hangers are being replaced. Two detachments will be housed in each hanger. The new structures will feature roll-up doors , walls that allow filtered light and reflective roofs to lessen solar heat in the buildings. The two new hangers will afford the El Centro airbase more room than the three hangers that are being replaced , allowing for an additional squadron detachment. NAF El Centro is the winter home of the U.S. Navys Blue Angels flight demonstration team and is in use year around because of the excellent flying conditions and the bases proximity to bombing and gunnery ranges.
