(37 year old suspected of more than just kidnapping)…Epifanio Mercado was arrested last week after leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase that began in Brawley, and ended in El Centro. Mercado had allegedly kidnapped a 17-year-old girl from Chino, California. Late last week a Federal Judge in El Centro ordered Mercado to face Cocaine trafficking charges in Los Angeles. Mercado, from El Monte, California, apparently has a criminal record that dates back to 1996. The suspect was held without bail of the federal drug warrant. The court said Mercado had a long history of drug trafficking, with alleged connections to the Arrellano-Felix Cartel. The 37 year old also was denied bail of the kidnapping charges because he is a flight risk. The Federal prosecutors will pursue the drug charges, while state will prosecute the kidnapping allegations. |
