(The death toll in Friday night’s tragic crash now stands at possibly 10)….Deputy Coroner Sergeant Charles Lucas says 6 more bodies were found at or near the crash site over the weekend. Lucas said one of the bodies found near the site has not been 100% connected to the crash of the vehicle carrying around 20 illegal immigrants. The other five bodies found included a mother, father and 9-year-old son. The family’s 12-year-old daughter survived the crash and is being cared for by the Mexican Consulate in Calexico. The Sergeant said most of the bodies recovered have been identified but their names cannot be released until families are notified, The Consulate in Calexico is assisting with that. The tragedy occurred late Friday night. The California Highway Patrol says a Suburban S U V was traveling down the canal bank of the Westside Main Canal. The driver was apparently traveling too fast to negotiate a curve. The vehicle went out of control and crashed upside down into the canal. The Border Patrol says they were not in pursuit of the vehicle when the incident occurred. It was initially reported that four people had died in the incident. The additional bodies were recovered Saturday and Sunday. |
