(Cross-border-trucking may end soon)….The pilot project was adopted last year.

It allows certain Mexican trucks to transport their cargo to destinations in the U.S., and it allows some U.S. trucks to do the same in Mexico. Critics, however, say the Mexican trucks are not held to the same safety requirements as the U.S. trucks. They say they endanger U.S. motorists. The House recently agreed by voting 395-18 to approve legislation to bar the Department of Transportation from granting authority to Mexican Carriers to travel into the United States beyond a narrow commercial zone. Local Congressman Bob Filner entered the House debate, accusing Mexican truck drivers of transferring permits and insurance policies required to participate in the pilot program from one truck to another, which violates the programs regulations. The legislation still must be approved by the Senate and signed by the President. Officials say that could happen by the end of the year. The Transportation Department argues that they have seen no evidence of wrongdoing, and have recommended the pilot program be extended two more years.
