Mexican trucks allowed in the U.S. for another two years PDF Print E-mail

(A controversial pilot program has been extended)….The pilot program allows Mexican trucks to haul cargo in the United States.

It also allows U.S. Trucks to haul into Mexico. The program was to have ended in September. A bill, Authored by Representative Pete DeFazio, claims the Mexican trucks are a danger to U.S. motorists, because of lax safety standards in Mexico. The bill calls for the pilot program to end September 6. The Oregon Democrat and others accuse the Department of Transportation is flaunting Congress by not ending the program last year. Transportation officials say they understood Congress last year voted to end future pilot programs. They said this week the law allows pilot programs to last three years, and were extending this one for the remaining two years. The Department said the added two years would be used to study the safety questions. They say, so far, there has been no evidence the Mexican trucks are any more dangers than the U.S. rigs. Opponents to the pilot program, including the Teamsters Union, claim the Mexican Truckers are not held to same safety standards as the U.S. trucks.
