(Drug Tunnel suspects charged)….Mexicali authorities have charged the 8 men found at the Madero Avenue house.

When the 150-yard tunnel was discovered this month by Mexicali Preventative Police, the 8 claimed to be employees of those responsible for the tunnel. Federal authorities have charged all 8 with racketeering and smuggling. The tunnel came up short of the international border. The suspects had said they were paid to dig the tunnel. Money and food was delivered by a masked man every month. It is suspected the tunnel is the work of a drug cartel, but the authorities do not know which one. The controlling cartel in Mexicali is the Sinaloa Based cartel led by Joaquin “Shorty” Guzman. There is no proof, however, that the tunnel was commissioned by the Guzman cartel. The former controlling cartel, the Arrellano/Felix cartel could also be responsible. The tunnel was very sophisticated, with a rail system to cart out the dirt, ventilation, electricity and air conditioning. It was dug about five meters below the house at Madero and “C” Street. The tunnel was discovered after neighbors called police to complain about the strange activity in and around the house.
