U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the downtown Calexico port of entry intercepted two loads of methamphetamine being smuggled into this country. Monday morning at about 9:30 a Chevy pick up with Baja California license plates was escorted to secondary inspection after the primary officer noticed anomalies in the vehicles undercarriage. During a more thorough inspection, using a canine and x-ray equiptment, six plastic containers with six pounds of methamphetamine was discovered. The driver , a Mexican citizen from Mexicali , was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation. At 3:00 that same afternoon , a 1999 Ford Expedition with California plates was referred to secondary inspection after a pre-primary inspection by a canine unit alerted to the presence of narcotics. In the secondary lot , seven wrapped packages of methamphetamine were found concealed in the undercarriage of the truck. The drugs weighed 12 pounds. The driver, also a resident of Mexicali , was arrested and turned over to ICE agents for further investigation. Total value of the seizures was said to be nearly $200,000.
