The rail component of the Mesquite Regional Landfill project moved closer to reality when a Conditional Use Permit was approved for development of a rail yard in the City of industry. The $250 million rail yard will be built on 17 acres adjacent to the Puente Hills Landfill. The intermodel rail yard will be used to load municipal solid waste onto trains that will haul it to the Mesquite Regional Landfill about 5 miles east of Glamis in Imperial County, California. The landfill will recieve up to 20,000 tons per day of municipal solid waste from the Los Angeles area and will be operated by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County. Sanitation District officials expect the desert dump to employ about 250 people when fully operational and will pay Imperial County fees of about $17 million per year. The facility could be operational by next year.
