(Damage from a major quake in California predicted)….While scientists cannot predict when the next earthquake will hit, they can predict the damage the next big one will cause.

A new scientific report is being published in the U.S. Geological Survey and in the California Geological Survey. The report is also being released at a congressional hearing in Washington D.C. In the report scientists predict the damage of a 7.8 quake along the San Andreas Fault. The quake would be similar to the recent disastrous temblor in China. The report estimates the next major quake along the San Andreas fault would most likely strike somewhere between the Coachella Valley and the Antelope Valley. They predict the earthquake would kill 1,800 people, injure 50,000, cause $200 billion in damage and have long-lasting economic and social consequences. To prepare for a major quake along the San Andreas fault, the largest preparedness drill in California history is being planned. The exercise is being called ‘Golden Guardian 08’, and will be held November 13. It is being organized by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the California Office of Homeland Security. The exercise will be a part of week-long events for the ‘Great Southern California Shakeout.’ A June 4 kick-off event is planned for the ‘Shakeout’ to help communities plan to respond to the risks highlighted in the report.
