The California Public Utilities Commission says Imperial County residents will soon have to start dialing 10 digits for all calls. The CPUC at a San Francisco hearing today, ruled that an area code overlay plan would soon be ordered for Imperial County as well as Inyo, Mono and Kern Counties and  parts of Riverside and San Bernnardino Counties. The overlay means that a new area code , 442 , will be established on top of the 760 area code that is already in place in these areas. Meanwhile, a portion of northern San Diego County in the Escondido and Oceanside area, will retain the 760 area code. With the overlay plan , all new numbers assigned in Imperial County will have the new area code. This means that you will have to dial 10 digits for all local calls.
