(Head of SEIU Southern California chapter steps aside)…Tyrone Freeman says he is taking a leave of absence until allegations against him are investigated.

An article in the Los Angeles Times last week accused Freeman of mispending Union funds. The article said Freeman gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to his wife and mother-in-law for their business operations. They allege he spent nearly $300,000 on a golf tournament, restaurants, a cigar club, the William Morris Agency and more. In a statement, Freeman said a trustee would temporarily take over his post with the Service Employee International Union until the accusations are investigated. The Union represents several state workers in Imperial County, as well as the In-Home Health Care workers. Freeman recently led an effort to recall County Supervisors in Counties around the state that were not signing contracts with the Health Care workers. That included four Imperial County Supervisors. Wally Leimgruber, one of those targeted in that recall effort, has asked the Union of a full accounting of its spending under Freeman. County Council Michael Rood was asked by the full Board last week to determine if the Union would be legally bound to honor Leimgrubers request.
