(The Caribbean Series is coming to Mexicali)…The Serie del Caribe is a seven game baseball tournament that will include teams from Mexico, Venezuela and the Caribbean. Sergeant Gonzalo Gerardo with the Calexico police department has begun meetings with the State and Municipal police in Mexicali to coordinate security during the Series, including the week prior and the week following the tournament. An influx of over 20,000 people is expected to converge on Mexicali, Imperial Valley and even Yuma for the 3-week period. Organizers are saying they are expecting the Series to generate $20 million to the local economies, with up to $5 million coming to Imperial Valley. Security for the visitors is very important, and the Sergeant said it must be a coordinated effort to ensure the event proceeds as smoothly as possible.
