(The week began with a big party, and it will end with a big party)….Calexico started the week Monday with its Centennial Party at Rockwood Plaza Park.

Mayor John Renison described it as a Big Public Party. It featured Norteno music, fireworks and a parade. Hundreds if not thousands gathered in the park to celebrate the border cities 100-year anniversary. The event was put together by the City, the Police Athletic League, The Calexico Chamber of Commerce, local residents and businesses. The anniversary of the actual incorporation of Calexico will be Wednesday. A special cake cutting ceremony will be held then at 5:30 pm in front of Camarena Memorial Library. This week ends Saturday with El Centro’s 100-year blast. The El Centro Centennial Party will be held at Stark Field on 4th Street. It will feature Joan Jett and the Blackhearts along with several other Rock bands. The highlight will be a fireworks display following the main concert. Like Calexico’s party, the El Centro event is free to the public.
